Conditions Associated with Peripheral & Central Vertigo

Sacramento-based vertigo chiropractor

According to Sacramento-based vertigo chiropractor, Dr. Brett Gottlieb, vertigo symptoms are often unpleasant symptoms of central vertigo or peripheral vertigo (vestibular diseases that affect the inner ear). Vertigo (as a symptom) can be caused by a lot of different conditions and health problems, including tumors, blood vessels in the brainstem or neck (vascular vertigo), multiple sclerosis, and other neurological conditions.

In this article, we'll get acquainted with the many conditions associated with this debilitating symptom in order to help you understand yourself, your condition, and the most appropriate and effective method of addressing your vertigo problems.

Vertigo Information Sheet

Vertigo is more commonly known as the sensation of spinning or whirling, which can be experienced in any part of the body. It’s usually a symptom of some sort, but it can also occur on its own.

For the symptoms of this symptom, you may experience any combination of the following:

  • Moving around slowly or spinning around
  • feeling like you are falling over (spinning dizziness)
  • seeing stars or images that seem to move with you
  • hearing sounds that seem to come from behind your head
  • feeling like something is going to fall off and hit you in the face if you look down too quickly (tilting vertigo).

It has 2 kinds, central vertigo and peripheral vertigo.

Peripheral Vertigo

This kind of vertigo is usually caused by a problem within the inner ear (vestibular nerve) or upper cervical spine (C1-T1). The inner ear has 3 semicircular canals that are responsible for processing sound, balance, and line of vision. The semicircular canals each have a cupula (the round structure) that helps channel sound waves into your inner ear; when you move your neck or head, it causes these cups to move too. The symptoms of peripheral vertigo include:

  • an unsteady feeling like you're about to fall over when walking around
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • hearing loss
  • tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • sensitivity to light and sound (photophobia)
  • blurred vision (scintillating scotoma)
  • numbness
  • tingling sensations (paresthesia) in your face or limbs.

Certain conditions can cause damage to these inner ear cupulas or cause them not to work properly:

Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo

BPPV is a common cause of vertigo. It's caused by loose debris in the inner ear, which causes the brain to mix up your balance system. Sacramento-based vertigo chiropractor suggests that BPPV can be treated with a specific type of chiropractic adjustment that helps dislodge whatever is causing it and restore normal function to your inner ear.

BPPV may also be related to Meniere's disease, which causes severe vertigo and tinnitus. If that's your case, it will be a great shout to see an expert, either an MD or a Sacramento-based vertigo chiropractor who specializes in treating inner ear disorders and their symptoms. These doctors have advanced training in diagnosing these conditions and can prescribe medications if necessary.

Meniere's disease

MD – for short – is a disorder of the inner ear that affects balance and hearing. Symptoms include vertigo, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. It's not caused by any one factor but rather by several factors working together over time to cause damage to your inner ear’s components.

Vestibular migraine

This condition is mainly an inflammation of the inner ear caused by either a bacteria or a virus, but it's also possible that you might have labyrinthitis after an injury to your head and get infected with a virus or bacteria that causes inflammation in your inner ear. It may also be due to:

Labyrinthitis

This condition is mainly an inflammation of the inner ear. This condition is mainly an inflammation of the inner ear. It can be caused by factors like viruses or bacteria, but it's also possible that you might have labyrinthitis after an injury to your head and get infected with a virus or bacteria that causes inflammation in your inner ear.

Central Vertigo

If your vertigo is because of a problem in your central nervous system, then you fall under central vertigo. Sacramento-based vertigo chiropractor, Dr. Gottlieb says that central vertigo can also result from head injury or other conditions such as stroke or brain surgery. Its symptoms are similar to some of those of peripheral vertigo such as dizziness and nausea, along with tinnitus (a hearing loss), dizziness, and fatigue. Conditions associated with central vertigo are:

Tumors (either malignant or benign)

Tumors can cause vertigo, dizziness, hearing loss, and balance problems. Tumors are abnormal growths in a body that cause pain or discomfort to the patient. Tumors can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (a.k.a. MS) is a progressive disease that affects the central nervous system. It causes damage to myelin, which provides insulation for nerve fibers in your brain and spinal cord. This damage can lead to problems with balance, vision, and other cognitive abilities. MS is also considered an autoimmune disease because it involves the body's immune system attacking itself by attacking its own tissues.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care for Any Vertigo

If you're looking for a treatment that can help with both peripheral and central vertigo, you should consider visiting an upper cervical chiropractor. The upper cervical spine is located in the neck and helps protect your nerves from damage. When it's injured or misaligned, this can cause dizziness and other symptoms like vertigo.
