Sometimes a person doesn't realize that a minor injury can have a major impact on our body in a number of different areas. A fall, a car accident, or an injury while playing sports can all affect our health. A person may think that it is enough to simply ice the injury, and as soon as the pain goes away all will be well. That is not necessarily the situation.
In some cases, the injury endured does not show up for days, weeks, or even years. And, the pain or problems being experienced may not even be in the area that was injured. What types of problems can occur from an injury?
- Migraine headaches: These are actually a neurological disorder that presents primarily with head pain. They usually occur in a central location and can last up to 72 hours.
- Cervical radiculopathy: If a nerve near the upper cervical vertebrae, the top seven bones, becomes compressed, damage can occur, or disturbances in body function can happen.

- Fibromyalgia: This is characterized by widespread pain throughout the body, irritability, sleep problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, and mood changes.
- Spondylolisthesis: This usually is due to the vertebrae slipping at the base of the spine. It can be caused by a fracture or defect in the bone above the one that has slipped out of place.
What to Do Next?
If a person suspects that he or she may be experiencing pain from a long-ago accident, the first step should be to seek out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. We will be happy to examine your upper cervical spine to see if a misalignment has occurred. This misalignment can definitely cause the above-mentioned problems because it slows down communication between the brain and the body. When signals are distorted, health problems ensue.
