Migraines are one of the most common health problems and affect up to 18% of women and 6% of men in the USA. Chronic headaches and migraines occurring more than 15 days during a months time, can be a real challenge for those suffering from them.
Family physicians often have a hard time finding appropriate relief for their patients. Each head pain is as unique as the person suffering from it. A variety of pain medications and other options exist, but finding the one that works for each person can be difficult. Some doctors may recommend:
- Prescription drugs
- Diet modification
- Surgery

What Causes Migraines?
The exact cause of head pain is still under much debate. Researchers understand how they happen, just not why. The parts of the body that are involved when a head pain occurs are the brain, the muscles, and the vascular and nervous systems.
New research is constantly being done to find answers for migraine sufferers. One area that is being looked at is the effect of vasodilators on rats and how this can help humans dealing with head pain. Issues with the flow of blood to the brain are one cause of migraines, and by injecting vasodilators into the blood stream, blood flow to the brain is increased.
While this has produced some positive results in animals, the effect on humans has not been tested yet. The drug is still in experimental stages. However, some have been able to find similar promising results using an all-natural way to cope with head pain.
How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Helps Migraines
Here at Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Sacramento, our migraine chiropractor in Sacramento specialize in making sure the C1 vertebra (atlas) is in proper alignment. This bone protects the brainstem unless it becomes misaligned. Then it can actually put pressure on the brainstem, causing the nervous system to malfunction. By correcting this misalignment, many patients have seen relief from headaches and migraines in as little as 1 or 2 adjustments.
